Overview

The Cable Test mode is a specialized feature within the RF guide designed to evaluate the status of cables based on their loss characteristics measured in decibels (dB). This mode is instrumental in assessing the health and performance of RF cables used in communication systems.

The primary goal of this mode is to quantify and analyze the cable loss in dB. Cable loss, or attenuation, refers to the reduction in signal strength as it travels through the cable. By understanding the extent of this loss, users can assess the cable's condition, identify potential issues, and make informed decisions to optimize signal transmission.

How to enable Cable Test mode

The Cable Test mode is available by two different ways:

Purchase Specific Cable Test License: Acquire the specific Cable Test license by purchasing "RFEPLIC53." This license is dedicated to enabling the Cable Test mode.

Purchase Frequency Coordination License: Alternatively, you can obtain the Frequency Coordination license "RFEPLIC52." This license not only includes Frequency Coordination capabilities but also unlocks access to the Cable Test mode.
Choose the option that best suits your requirements to enable and utilize the Cable Test mode effectively.

How to perform RF Cable Test

Enter Cable Test mode, navigate to menu “Mode” and select “Cable Test”.

By following steps described below, users can accurately measure the loss characteristics of the RF cable, allowing for effective assessment and optimization of the cable's performance in the specified frequency range.

Define Cable Name

Begin by assigning a name to the cable you are testing. This helps in organizing and referencing results.

Specify Cable Type and Insertion Loss

Choose the cable type from predefined standards like LMR or RG. Specify the related nominal insertion loss, ensuring accurate testing parameters.

Set Cable Length

Enter the length of the cable being tested. This information is crucial for precise evaluation.

Connect to SMA Connectors

Connect the cable to both SMA connectors labeled "Input 50Ω" and "RFEGEN Out 50Ω" on the device. Ensure secure connections.

Initiate Test

Press the [Start] button in the menu and confirm any prompted messages once the cable is correctly connected.

View Results

The interface will display the current measured cable loss, indicating signal attenuation. Additionally, the "RF Cable Status" label will convey cable health, appearing as "Optimal" in blue, "Malfunctioning" in yellow, "Deteriorated" in orange or "Damaged" in red.

Conclude Measurement

After evaluating the connected cable, press the [Stop] button to conclude the measurement. Results are automatically stored for future reference.
  • To change longitude units go to menu Config -> Display and select “Metrical” to use "Meter" or “Imperial” to use "Feet"
  • Cable test measures performed up to stop frequency 3GHz
  • RF Cable Status

    Depending on the measured losses and comparing them with the expected loss according to the cable characteristics, four different scenarios can be identified. These scenarios will determine the outcome of the cable and, consequently, its status.

    This will be represented by the color of the indicator and through the description of the status label.

    RF Cable Status: Optimal

    RF Cable Status: Malfunctioning

    RF Cable Status: Deteriorated

    RF Cable Status: Damaged

    Measurement case study

    For the cable labeled "BNCG1" depicted, the test result indicates that the RF cable status is "Optimal".

    The measured current loss is -5.0 dB, and it has been determined to be better than the expected loss based on the characteristics of the cable.

    The expected cable loss for this particular cable is -7.05 dB.

    How to define Cable Type

    Users have the flexibility to define custom cable types and nominal loss values, allowing for a tailored approach that covers a diverse range of requirements.

    To determine and adjust the cable measurement with the utmost accuracy, obtain the cable characteristics and parameters directly from the manufacturer's datasheet. Clearly indicate the defined loss for the frequency at 1 GHz.
